Physical survival needs top the list. Only after these needs
have been met will the brain turn its attention to needs
like social connection; only after social needs have been
met will attention go to abstract learning; only then will
we turn to abstract expression; and so on. 

Schadenfreude describes a psychological state in which we
take joy in the suffering of others. 

The mental operation that allows for this efficient
allocation of attention is called a _search image_. Anything
that matches particular specifications gets full attention,
whereas other images fade into the background or never make
it into conscious awareness at all.
